Christmas Appeal for Findhorn Hinterland Trust – Dune Restoration Project

Lichen (Cladonia coccifera agg.) with red apothecia, covered in frost crystals, with dog lichen (Peltigera malacea) behind, Findhorn Hinterland

We are seeking £5,000 to regenerate biodiversity and natural ecological processes in our beautiful local landscape.

Findhorn sand dune ecosystem, once the second largest in Europe, is under imminent threat from rapidly encroaching scrub vegetation.  Many species found here – lichens, insects, and fungi – are found at only a handful of places in the UK.

Findhorn Hinterland Trust, in partnership with our neighbour Findhorn Dunes Trust, is planning an ambitious project to restore six hectares of natural dune habitat by carefully targeted scrub removal.  The scale of action needed is not achievable by our volunteer work parties and will be looking to engage contractors with specialist equipment.

We are seeking £5,000 from friends, supporters, members and well-wishers to help-us prepare the project and secure grant funding, with a view to action on the ground taking place next winter 2024/25.

This is a unique opportunity to help make a real difference to improving the biodiversity in our local area.
